Photographs: Remembered, Retold, and Dreamed

With his latest series, "In A Big World Wandering" making its national tour, artist-photographer, Bryan David Grifffith is gaining recognition for his traditional methods and poignant and challenging perspective. His process, lifestyle and reasons for making artwork are captured in this artist profile written by Deanna Wulff:

With his fingers icy and red, Bryan David Griffith holds his breath and watches the play of light and snow in the aspens. He has hiked up to the base of Mt. Humphrey’s, the highest peak in Arizona—in the middle of a blizzard. The wind blows up a white plume of frost, and he opens the shutter for a long exposure, counting the seconds aloud while shielding his lens from the snow. “For every exposure I make, I spend many days in the field just observing, waiting for that rare moment when the season, time and weather add up to just the right light,” he says.

He uses old-fashioned large format sheet-film cameras, which are larger, slower and more difficult to operate than 35mm cameras. “The large film produces incredibly detailed, nuanced images unattainable by any other means,” he says. “The world of photography is changing, but this process still produces the finest prints possible.” Griffith’s newest work delves even further into analogue techniques, using low-tech equipment and the nineteenth-century platinum palladium printing process. “It’s my attempt to get at the core of my reasons for making art, through using really basic equipment,” he explains. “The images have a blurry quality of being remembered, or recalled. A lot of them are metaphors for my life as an artist, but I try to make them deliberately open-ended and ambiguous, so viewers can fill in the narrative with their own experiences.”

A self-taught photographer, Griffith left a successful career in management consulting to pursue photography full-time. It was a riches to rags transition for the first couple years, with Griffith essentially living out of an old van, traveling across the country and saving every cent for film. Since then, his portfolios have won numerous awards, including two first place awards in photography at the Sausalito Art Festival—ranked the top art fair in America—and three first place awards at the Scottsdale Arts Festival, ranked the top art fair in Arizona. His work is also held in several university, corporate, and private collections, but Griffith feels most honored by the hundreds of “ordinary people who’ve given my work a place in their homes and lives.”

IN A BIG WORLD WANDERING is currently showcased at Translations Gallery through September 28th. There will be a closing reception for In A Big World Wandering on Wednesday, September 28th from 5-8:30pm where published books of the exhibition can be purchased and signed by the artist.

Do You Speak "Figures"?

The May 19th opening of Translations' new show, Figuratively Speaking brought together a fantastic group of artists working in media from sculpture and painting to mosaic and charcoal drawing.

The only real criteria for the work, as the show's title might suggest, is that it be based on figures - needless to say, the range of pieces the show contains is quite broad, allowing the featured artists to stand out for their individual styles.

The opening was a very pleasant combination of beautiful work and good company - there was also a lot of delicious food there, which certainly contributed to the collective good mood (as snacks always do).

People came and went happily throughout the evening, drinking mint juleps and trying to shove other people out of the way of their view of the artwork.

Several of the show's featured artists attended the opening as well, giving people the chance to speak with them about their work.

The "figure" pieces varied wildly, from abstract to concrete, black and white to color. The wide array of styles - Brian Curran's beautifully rendered charcoal portraits hanging next to Lance Green's colorful, fluid, slightly abstracted paintings and Sandhi Schimmel Gold's mixed media mosaics - somehow all seemed to fit together, their differences enhancing the best qualities of each artist's work.

(And an abundance of mint juleps never hurts a sense of cohesion either).

25 Years of Lance Green (Figuratively Speaking)

Lance Green, one of Translations Gallery's newer artists, currently has a retrospective exhibition showcasing 25 years of his paintings, drawings and sculpture on display in Manitou Springs. The show celebrates Green's artistic evolution, beginning with his childhood in Los Angeles and traveling through his life as an artist, ending up at his current life and work in Colorado. To complement the show, Green will also be giving an art talk at the Business of Art Center's Venue 515 on May 11. The show, titled Bringing it All Back Home runs through mid-June, and leads right into Translations Gallery's upcoming show Figuratively Speaking, which will also feature work by Green as well as other artists represented by the gallery.

Figuratively Speaking will, as the show's title suggests, focus on sculptural pieces, paintings and other media with an emphasis on figure and form - one of the cornerstones of Green's work, which often reinterprets images taken from painful stages of life as new and beautiful objects.

Lance Jackson at the Bentley Exposition

Do you know what is an awesome combination? We will tell you - ART AND CARS! In honor of this glorious pairing, Translations Gallery recently installed work at Denver's Bentley dealership for the March release of Bentley's new Continental GT.

Several artists were represented in the temporary exhibition, including Lance Jackson, who has been showing his work with Translations since August of 2010.

Translations Gallery is proud to announce that we are expanding! Expanding our artists, that is. We have recently begun representing 21 new artists, most of whom live and work in Colorado. These artists work in a wide variety of media, including paint, metal, ceramics, fiber and other materials. They have collectively created a vast body of beautiful work. We would like to introduce them to you. Because there are 21, however, which is really quite a lot, we will be approaching these introductions in a series of blog posts, of which this is the first. So here are the stats on 7 of the brand new artists Translations Gallery is thrilled and proud to represent.

- PATRICIA AARON -
The recent winner of Best in Show at the This is Colorado exhibit, Patricia Aaron's mixed-media encaustic works are truly stunning. Her pieces tend to be based on scenes remembered from her Ohio childhood, the abstract works evoking the kind of gritty, grey urbanism you feel when standing in the middle of a busy city that has been polluted by industry. Aaron approaches these landscapes with a lovely combination of honesty and nostalgia, the combination of which produces work that is fascinating in its ability to simultaneously project both order and chaos.

Ana Maria Botero's work as an artist began as a hobby - background for a prominent career in the field of architecture. Her passion for art, however, eventually won out as her dominant interest, and Botero has been producing work consistently since. Botero's semi-abstract and abstract paintings focus on pulling emotion from viewers through experimentation with color, texture, and other elements designed to elicit excitement and a sense of drama.

Painter, drawer, poet - Patricia Bramsen's work draws from numerous avenues of creativity to form her overall vibe as an artist. Inspiration, potential, possibility - these words describe the driving forces behind Judy Brown's work. Her awareness of her surroundings, and of the way in which she and others interact with the natural world around them forms the basis of both her technique and her aesthetic. Her work with metals and jewelry is informed by what she sees occurring naturally in the world around her, and she constantly strives to maintain a balance between the world as it is and the effects that humans have upon it.

Brian Curran's charcoal drawings are intricate, delicately detailed and remarkably realistic. His images of well-known figures from the world of celebrity stand out as strikingly different from the work of other artists.

- WILL DAY -

Will Day's journey to his current career as an artist has taken him to numerous countries, through higher-education programs and other vocational opportunities, and to an exploration of various creative outlets and artistic media. Following time in the Peace Corps, extensive personal travel, and a career in architecture, Will Day came to the conclusion that what he really wanted to do was paint. Paint a lot. Big. With many colors and varied textures and materials. And that is precisely what he did.

Architectural forms, the concepts of space, light and pattern - these elements have become incredibly important to Barry Gillespie's recent works. His earlier, more abstract works certainly contained versions of these elements, but it is only recently that Gillespie has begun to introduce a new sense of intensified realism into his art. Focusing on local buildings and locations, he methodically captures the play between light and architectural form, giving a new perspective on familiar objects.

Patricia Aaron - Best in Show!

This is Colorado, an exhibit held each year to showcase the work of Colorado artists, is currently being held at the Madden Museum of Art. It's a new location for the traditional show, though the rest of the tradition seems to have remained intact. This is Colorado is a "juried exhibit", meaning that the works are judged by locals and then awarded the art equivalents of gold, silver and bronze. "Gold", in this case, is actually called "Best in Show", and we are thrilled to announce that the gold medal goes to...Patricia Aaron!

This is Colorado featured Aaron's ink-and-encaustic work Youngstown, circa 1964. The piece is a large-scale cityscape rendered in a vibrantly colored, abstract combination of beeswax, India ink, graphite and other materials on a birch panel. The result is a brilliant mish-mash of colors, movement and shapes that simultaneously pull the viewers eye in different directions, which actually recreates the bustling, stimulating feeling of being in the middle of a crowded, industrial urban area. In looking at the abstract work it is almost possible to make out the blurred outlines of buildings against the grainy, gray sky that framed Aaron's childhood in the industrial city of Youngstown, Ohio.

Aaron's work will next be featured in Translations Gallery's upcoming show New Perspectives. The show will present the work of artists who approach familiar topics in unexpected and non-traditional ways - in Aaron's case, cityscapes and personal history done in a slightly wild, somewhat unsentimental, abstract yet comprehensible style. The show opens at Translations on February 16th and runs through April 2nd.

Yee Haw, Cowboys...and Girls. Contemporary Art says Howdy.

Last week began the annual Denver Stock Show. As usual, it commenced with a parade involving several covered wagons, a variety of Western-style beauty queens, lots of people on horses wearing chaps and fancy hats, and, inexplicably, several old-school fire trucks. There was also a somewhat unnerving mascot dressed as Woody the Cowboy.

As a huge crowd of pedestrians, some of whom possibly just got caught up in the shuffle on their way to lunch, stood around chatting and blocking traffic, a crowd of stampeding longhorns was shepherded down 17th Street by cowboys-and-girls (cowfolk? cowpeople?)

Suppressing an unexplained fear of farm animals, we braved the crowd and observed as the clamor moved uptown.

The whole parade experience was extremely patriotic. Pedestrians of all ages cheered and waved flags and cowgirls in fancy outfits smiled blindingly (and really, who isn't a sucker for a sparkly cowboy hat?)

All in all, an hour well spent.

In honor of the stock show, Translations is currently featuring artists influenced by the culture of the American West. The show is wide-ranging, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, jewelry and photographs, and showcasing both abstract art (traditional for Translations) and realistic work. While the show certainly features traditional images of the west, bucking broncos are not the only offerings.

and traditional western landscapes approached in a thoroughly nontraditional manner give the show the element of surprise and open it up to viewers who may not necessarily be interested in conventional western art. Even if Cowboys-and-Indians isn't your thing, there's probably something here for you anyway. We love Bryan David Griffith's crazy colors, Paula Hudson's unusual approach to traditional subject matter, Jillian Pate's lace-like metal work, and the stunning digital prints done by Izah Gallagher. Do You Know Laura Carpenter? 100,000 People at D.I.A. Do.

Don’t worry - getting your work an audience of 100,000 people a day is simple. To accumulate this volume of viewers, you can either broadcast on the Times Square Jumbotron, which sounds costly, or you can get Denver International Airport to hang your work in one of its terminals. Laura Carpenter, an artist with Translations Gallery since April of 2010, is taking the latter approach, participating in DIA’s Shows Promise, exhibited on level 6 of the Jeppesen Terminal East. True, the airport is not a typical exhibition space for fine art, but it has proven surprisingly adept at housing the work of well known artists around Denver, allowing a massive audience to view the artwork each day as they mosey through the airport terminal (or sprint depending on how late they are for their flights and how long the TSA screening lasted).

Carpenter, a Colorado-based artist who is also a Masters of Fine Arts student at Colorado State University, is getting a huge amount of exposure from the Shows Promise exhibit. The show emphasizes Colorado’s landscapes and history while providing artists seeking higher education with an audience of international viewers who get to see the work hassel-free as they travel across the terminal on one of those moving sidewalks.

Carpenter’s work moves effortlessly between concrete objects and abstract images. Her pieces are surprising and unexpected; partially realized representations of woods and houses are rendered in vivid colors that seem oddly at home in the work despite the noticeable contradiction of Carpenter’s bright blues and bold yellows with the muted

greens and browns typically imagined to be the base colors of the Colorado landscape.

LoDo District Named One of Top 10 Neighborhoods for 2010

Translations Gallery is located in historic LoDo (Lower Downtown), one of the best neighborhoods in Denver. We were recently excited to learn that the American Planning Association (APA) just named LoDo District one of Top 10 Neighborhoods for 2010 under the Great Places in American program. APA recognized LoDo for its historic character, renovation of old warehouse buildings, support from current and former Denver mayors, and urban planning.

Translations Gallery moved to LoDo in 2009 for the neighborhood's historic nature, quality businesses including other art galleries, and top Denver restaurants. Gallery owner and LoDo District Inc. board member Judy Hagler comments, "We are excited to be part of this thriving neighborhood and will do whatever we can to continue to support the businesses and residents."

Translations Gallery artist Jim Pittman has work in the Denver Art Museum

Translations Gallery's current exhibition of work by Jim Pittman and Mark Bowles is getting a lot of attention from both the press and the general public. Both artists create large scale, abstract, minimalist landscape paintings.

These too esteemed artists both have work in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum. While Bowles' piece, Intersection was recently acquired by the museum in 2009, Pittman's piece, Marble Canyon was accepted into the permanent collection in 2003. The museum stated "that the painting Marble Canyon was timeless and a perfect fit for them as it could be exhibited in either the contemporary or western collections" (from Denver Art Museum Press Release 12/03).

New Artist Cheryl Dietz Joins Translations Gallery

We are proud to announce that Cheryl Dietz is now a represented artist at Translations Gallery. In Cheryl Dietz’s work, orientation is not a rule. Her contemporary landscapes involve overlapping transparent images and multiple viewpoints. Invisible boundaries, transient exchanges, and the spaces in-between ordinary life intermingle with the textures of the Southwestern landscape and encroaching urban life. What is built, what grows, what is felt and what is imagined are all combined to express an environment of disruption and unpredictability. Dietz is interested in movements out of proportion, possibilities of unstable equilibrium and interpretations that are not to be found by simple observation. Cheryl is from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Translations Gallery currently has Cheryl's work on view. Her amazing 8ft x 8ft piece titled Midnight Burn will be on view for the month of October.

We're a Best Bet in this Week's Denver Post

Denver Post Art Critic Kyle MacMillan chose our current exhibition, Mark Bowles and Jim Pittman as one of this week's Best Bets for Entertainment in Denver. Kyle noted that Mark Bowles is an emerging name in the Denver market. The Denver Art Museum recently accepted one of Bowles' pieces into their permanent collection.

Director of the Denver Art Museum's Petrie Institute for Western American Art, Thomas B. Smith states about Bowles' work, "Mark Bowles’ color fields celebrate the simplicity of the western landscape. He does not labor over specific locations but instead composes studio rendered impressions that have seared his consciousness and reflect the symbolic essence of place. His use of color and aesthetic nuances creates an intimate dialogue in which the viewer equally shares his delight for painting.”

Mark Bowles is showing alongside Boulder, Colorado artist Jim Pittman, who celebrates the Southwest landscape. While Mark Bowles is inspired by the plains, Jim Pittman is inspired by canyons, kivas, and other land forms that are present in the Southwest.

See Rob Williams Aspens at Mateo Restaurant in Boulder, Colorado

Art by Colorado artist Rob Williams will be on display at Mateo Restaurant in Boulder, Colorado through mid November 2010. Mateo Restaurant features cuisine that is inspired by the Provence Region in Europe. The art on Mateo's walls is from the Aspens exhibition that was on view at Translations Gallery, a Denver art gallery, in July 2010. Several of Rob's floral pieces are also on display.

Mateo Restaurant's minimal and streamlined design are the perfect setting for Rob's work. The urban design also compliments the bold color palette and contemporary graphic quality of the pieces. (All artwork will be for sale while on view at Mateo Restaurant).

Downtown Denver Art Galleries

Visit Denver recently wrote an article for their website about shopping for art in Denver, Colorado. They did not mention the top area to shop for artwork and visit art galleries, which is downtown Denver. Wazee Street has five high caliber art galleries including Translations Gallery, Robischon Gallery, Visions West Gallery, David Cook Gallery, and David B. Smith Gallery. You can also find Plus Gallery, Great Western Art Gallery, and MCA Denver just a few blocks away.

Artwork can be found in a wide range of prices in these galleries, both affordable and high value. You may also simply browse and enjoy the artwork. Be sure to stop by Translations Gallery on Thursdays for Dessert Day. The gallery offers complimentary desserts to snack on while viewing exhibitions.

These galleries also offer their spaces for event rental. LoDo is the best neighborhood in Denver to have events with convenient access to public transportation and the best hotels and nightlife spots in the city.

The downtown Denver art galleries are located in LoDo, just 1 block from the 16th Street Mall shuttle and Union Station. Wazee Street is also home to great restaurants like Mangiamo Pronto and Big Game.

Translations Gallery Artist Rachel Darnell has Two Pieces in the New Four Seasons Hotel, Denver

The new Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown Denver has nearly 1,200 pieces of contemporary art. Included in this amazing art collection is work by Translations Gallery artist Rachel Darnell. The artist was commissioned to complete two 54" x 54" pieces for the space outside of the Ballroom. She worked off of an existing piece entitled Mystic Mahogany (shown above). The process for this piece includes torn strips of canvas reassembled and painted with silver leaf. Her pieces are large, impressive, and will add contemporary glam to the ballroom space.

Denver Magazine recently wrote about the new art collection in their August 2010 issue, but did not mention Darnell because she is from New Mexico, not Colorado. Read the article here.

AARP's My Generation to film Sandhi Schimmel Gold at Translations Gallery

We are proud to announce that AARP will be filming during our upcoming Exhibition Opening with artist Sandhi Schimmel Gold for their tv show My Generation. "Each week, My Generation features celebrities and nationally known experts covering issues from health and money to relationships and volunteering. The program includes award-winning stories of reinvention, pursuing your passion, and making a difference" (from aarp.org).

Sandhi's unique approach to the contemporary portrait with use of recycled materials has put her in the spotlight. She recently had a piece acquired into the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum in Florida. She was also named one of 5 Artists to Watch in the March 2010 issue of Phoenix Home & Garden. The large banner of Pixie is still up on the back of the Buell Theater on Champa Street in Denver, Colorado. The Exhibition Opening will be August 6th, 5:00 - 8:30pm.

Translations Gallery Artist Laura Carpenter is an "Artist to Watch"

We brought Laura Carpenter on as an represented artist earlier this year, and were pleased to find out that she was named an "Artist to Watch" in the February 2007 issue of Southwest Art Magazine. She is currently working on her MFA at Colorado State University. Her painting has progressed from vast landscapes with dark palettes to close-up landscape views with bright palettes. The piece shown above, Path, is a large 72" x 84". She works in both large and small scale and captures an intimate yet vibrant landscape in all sizes. We will have Laura's work on view at the gallery during the month of August with a reception on the evening of August 6th with the artist in attendance.

Translations Gallery is 4 years old this month! After relocating to Downtown Denver last year, we have had more visitors, more amazing exhibitions, and more events than any other year in business. Several major museums including the Denver Art Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art acquired work into their permanent collection by our artists: Mark Bowles and Ruth Borgenicht. We have also had the opportunity to host events with major Denver businesses and organizations including the IIDA (International Interior Design Association).

Translation Gallery Artist Bruce Marion Installs Major Commission at Sam Houston State University

Translations Gallery Artist Bruce Marion just finished installing a major project at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. The work graces the entrances of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Bruce was chosen from hundreds of applicants for the project.

The work is part of the "Facets" and "Confluence" series and includes 19 large scale canvases that are shown in groups or pairs. We are proud to announce that Translations Gallery owner, Judy Hagler, was elected to the LoDo Board of Directors this week for a two year term.

Judy stated, "I am very happy to have this opportunity to become more involved in the LoDo District. There are many amazing projects going on in this neighborhood including the redevelopment of Union Station that I am excited to get involved in."

Judy is the only arts & culture board member at this time, so her voice is vital to the progression of the arts in LoDo and Downtown Denver. She is also co-chair of the LoDo Alley Cats Arts Festival, which will be taking place for the first time in 2011.

Denver Post Critic Kyle MacMillan Reviews our Current Exhibition

Our current exhibition of work by tapestry artist James Koehler was reviewed by Kyle MacMillan of the Denver Post today. We love the reference to Josef Albers' work as well as how certain works reflect subtle mountain terrain such as Harmonic Oscillation LXII. When Kyle came into the gallery, he was surprised to see that the work is so tightly-woven thinking that it may have had some three dimensionality to it. In viewing the images online, it appears that these works are three dimensional due to Koehler's expertise in dying a monochromatic palette that once woven, appears as rippling waves of water in the sunlight.

The exhibition will be on display at Translations Gallery until tomorrow, May 1st, but some pieces will still be available for purchase. Payment plans are available.

The Curfman Gallery’s 40th anniversary culminates with its longest running annual exhibit, the Undergraduate Visual Art Exhibition at Colorado State University. This annual exhibition serves to showcase the top talent of CSU artists regardless of major. It is no surprise that with the level of student involvement, hard work and peer support that the Undergraduate Exhibition tends to be one of the most popular exhibitions at the Curfman Gallery each year. The exhibition seeks to provide the CSU community with a deeper understanding of the arts while celebrating the CSU students' artistic and academic achievements.

Translations Gallery owner, Judy Hagler and director, Kate Chimenti were asked to jury this prestigious exhibition. The artist talent at CSU is amazing as Judy and Kate well know. New Translations Gallery Artist - Laura Carpenter

We excited to announce our newest artist to Translations Gallery, Laura Carpenter. Laura has been working with the subject of landscape for 8 years in Colorado. Her current work explores the balance between real and abstract, natural and manmade, and local and non-local color. She is employing a technique of ‘reductive’ painting where she lays down oil paint and then strategically takes it away with layers of glazes and washes in between. She is influenced by the landscape she lives in as well as memories and images from other places she has experienced. In 2008 Laura was featured in Southwest Art Magazine as an ‘artist to watch’. She is currently in graduate school to obtain her MFA at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Dru Dormer, new puppy addition to the gallery family

Translations Gallery artist James Dormer just got a new Springer Spaniel puppy named Dru. We think it's pretty funny when dog owners look like their dogs. However, we find that Dru resembles Dormer's artwork. The black and white colors of his coat are found in many of Dormer's amazing lithographs, which he completes using automatism or mark-making. New HBurger Restaurant, Denver

The new HBurger Restaurant located in Denver's LoDo District on 16th Street Mall is opening this week. We are proud to announce that the restaurant recently acquired an amazing painting from Translations Gallery, Lisabel Filiatrault's Joy. The piece is 8' x 4' and hangs behind the bar. We think it is quite fitting due to the fact that the painting resembles ketchup, mustard, and mayo in a beautifully balanced composition.

The gallery staff had the pleasure of attending an opening party last Friday to enjoy tastings of some of HBurger's fine cuisine, including the Eden (veggie) burger, sweet potato fries, and to-die-for ice cream sandwiches. We also enjoyed a fabulous lunch today with the traditional hburger, super yummy french fries (we can't figure out what they put on them to make them so addictive), and the Marshmellow Nutella Milk Shake (vanilla vodka, hazelnut liquor, Nutella, vanilla ice cream, topped with roasted marshmellows). How many different ways are there to say YUM?

The International Interior Design Association Forum is held at Translations Gallery every month. This month, we heard Keynote Speaker Cheryl Durst, the CEO of the IIDA. Her talk was about the future of design and how changes in the world and American population are affecting those changes. One of the more interesting points for us was her description of a Time of Optimism. People are craving signs of an optimistic future in every part of their lives. A symbol for this optimism is the color yellow. Yellow was a popular color for design in 2009, and it will continue for 2010. We can find this symbolic color not only in design but in film. In the movie Slumdog Millionare, yellow is strategically inserted into scenes every 20 minutes. We pay attention to these trends, and so do our artists. Denver Theatre District Exhibits Large Scale Art Canvas with work by Translations Gallery Artist Sandhi Schimmel Gold

Artwork entitled Pixie by Translations Gallery artist Sandhi Schimmel Gold has been blown up on a huge banner that is located on the wall behind the Buell Theater on Champa Street between 13th and 14th Streets. The banner will be on display alongside two others for the next 6 months. The three large-scale art canvases were curated for display by Plus Gallery owner Ivar Zeile.

The Denver Theatre District's vision is to fill downtown Denver with giant outdoor media as well as arts-related signage for cultural organizations and art galleries to promote artists, shows, upcoming events, and exhibits.

The Denver Theatre District unveiled the first of a series of large-scale outdoor art canvases as part of its new "outdoor gallery" of contemporary art. This is the first time a privately funded, outdoor art presentation has been attempted on this scale anywhere in the U.S., once again positioning the city of Denver as a pioneer for innovative public-private downtown development efforts.

We were pondering today over the way gallery staff are perceived in the art industry, whether in Denver, New York, or Chicago. A few words came to mind: snobby, unapproachable, and "know-it-alls". The truth is, in Denver, we all do our best to stay away from that perception. At Translations Gallery, for example, we wear jeans everyday, play cool music like jazz or electronica, and work at our desks out in the gallery. We also have high quality contemporary art on the walls with a payment plan option clearly printed on every wall tag. We feel that we make it easier for our guests to approach us about art, and we have received many comments that we always have a warm and inviting space.

The lesson to be learned here: Fine Art is for the Masses. Don't be shy about wandering into an art gallery or asking questions about the art. It's ok to browse, and it's also ok to buy!

Translations Gallery is honored to feature artists James Koehler and Anne Bossert September 18th through October 31st. The artists display two types of weaving, including tapestry and incorporating weaving into furniture. This exhibition takes the gallery back to its roots as a fiber art gallery.

James Koehler's work is thoroughly rooted in the cultural traditions of the American Southwest, yet is boldly contemporary, making him one of the most sought out weavers in the southwest. He dyes his own wool to achieve vibrant unique colors and does all of the weaving himself with a high quality of craftsmanship. He continues to be influenced by the extraordinary landscape and unique cultures of New Mexico and by certain aspects of the monastic aesthetic--simplicity, purity, seeking and portraying only what is essential.

Anne Bossert creates furniture as the means to communicate her solid belief in the profound beauty of the handmade. Each piece of furniture is hand-carved and dyed by the artist and features hand-dyed, hand-woven cloth as a design element. She deliberately uses Baltic birch plywood for its fine striations. Her palettes are subtle to bold as well as contemporary and sophisticated.

Translations Gallery is offering art collectors an affordable means to continue collecting in these tough economic times. Owner Judy Hagler has decided to develop interest free payment plans that range from 3 - 6 months. The idea is similar to what many businesses are doing right now, but has rarely been applied to art galleries. A $3,000 piece of art is suddenly within reach for people. With a 6 month payment plan, the work is only $500/month.

The gallery has also brought in smaller pieces by their group of 20 represented artists. Mark Bowles, who just had a piece accepted into the Denver Art Museum, has originals that range from $1,800 - $12,000, but he also creates high quality giclees that are only $500. The gallery also has small works by Colorado artist Deidre Adams. She just had a piece acquired into the new Ritz Carlton, Lake Tahoe, and has small original work at the gallery from $85 - $190.

Judy Hagler wants to spread the word that fine art galleries have affordable work! She is happy to fine the right piece for anyone's budget.

The art consultants at Translations Gallery just returned from Art Expo Las Vegas. The Art Fair was sponsored by Art Business News, and also takes place in New York and Miami every year. Their education series, sponsored by the International Art Business Conference, featured classes in art gallery marketing, art gallery sales, and collector development. Translations Gallery's art consultants received certificates in these programs, and are now better able to work with the contemporary fine art collecting community. In addition, gallery manager Kate Merkel was a participant in the Art Business News Roundtable discussion that took place in the center of the Art Expo floor. She was accompanied by seven other art industry professionals who all discussed the current changing art market in front of a crowd of about fifty people. Translations Gallery's participation in all of these events will certainly push the city of Denver foward in the contemporary fine art market!

One of our newest artists at Translations Gallery is SA Schimmel Gold. Her brilliance comes from her idea to look for art materials in unusual places like her mailbox. All of that annoying junk mail that comes from Verizon and Comcast or even the hundreds of greeting cards that have piled up in your closet that you feel bad about throwing away can be used to create something. Yes, I'm sure Grandma took a long time to pick out that specific greeting card, so why not turn that $2.99 greeting card into a valuable work of art? This is SA Schimmel Gold's idea that led her to create an abundance of amazing pop-like portraits primarily of women. Eco Art

Lately, we have found ourselves falling upon eco-friendly art. Our last show, Ordinary Alchemy, featured 2 artists who consider the environment with their artwork. Christina Yocca creates sculpture that is made soley from organic materials that can safely return to the earth, while Cassandra Tondro rescues mis-mixed house paints from Home Depot that end up in the trash if not purchased. Our current show, Urban Mosaics features Sandy Schimmel Gold who creates portraits from recycled mail, and Joshua Stone who makes paper from recycled paper in addition to creating work with found objects like glass and rubber from tires.

Our next show, which could be said to perhaps complete our series, is entitled Assemblage & Recyclates. The exhibition will feature nine artists who work with found objects and recycled materials. Seven of the artists are from Colorado. Their found materials range from wood, glass, and plastic to Tyvek, used coffee filters, and old maps.

The power of art reigns as always with artists who demonstrate their concern for our environment in our series of Eco-friendly art exhibitions.

Adrienne Outlaw's Vessels

Our newest artist, Adrienne Outlaw creates work in a variety of unique mediums. We showed her Fecund Series in the exhibition, Under the Skin last year. These pieces consisted of small sculptures that protruded from the wall, made out of different materials like wax and fibers. When you look into them, you see objects like bugs. Although somewhat creepy, they were a hit at the exhibition. A new piece is Vessels, which is an artwork that basically molds to the installation space. The best installation is an immense 12' x 6'. The smallest is one tile, measuring about 10" x 10". Materials are brass mesh, wood, and paper. We love the idea of customizing art!

Everyone is about "green" lately. What about incorporating it into architecture? Denver's brand new Museum of Contemporary Art building is on the verge of becoming the first contemporary art museum to have LEED certification, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System. Oh yea, the art is amazing too. If you visit, be sure to check out Wangechi Mutu's sprawling installation Will Honey Flavoured Milk Soften That Pig Fed Rage. Yes, the piece is as unusual as the title suggests. Gotta love the shock value of contemporary art!
