Buy Art in Denver, not Santa Fe

Recently, several guests stopped in the gallery and commented that they just returned from Santa Fe, New Mexico where they purchased art. Yet, they absolutely loved what we had in the gallery. Tip: Save on paying for shipping costs and buy local! Denver has a lot of great art galleries, and fine art is reasonably priced here. Denver also has 8 art districts that include over 300 small & large arts & cultural organizations. For a Denver Gallery Guide, stop into any art gallery or download one online on the DOCA website.

The Misperception of Gallery Staff

We were pondering today over the way gallery staff are perceived in the art industry, whether in Denver, New York, or Chicago. A few words came to mind: snobby, unapproachable, and "know-it-alls". The truth is, in Denver, we all do our best to stay away from that perception. At Translations Gallery, for example, we wear jeans everyday, play cool music like jazz or electronica, and work at our desks out in the gallery. We also have high quality contemporary art on the walls with a payment plan option clearly printed on every wall tag. We feel that we make it easier for our guests to approach us about art, and we have received many comments that we always have a warm and inviting space.

The lesson to be learned here: Fine Art is for the Masses. Don't be shy about wandering into an art gallery or asking questions about the art. It's ok to browse, and it's also ok to buy!

Great Turnout for Reception Last Friday

Translations Gallery had an Artist Reception for James Koehler and Anne Bossert on Friday, October 2nd. We had the best turnout that we've had since the gallery's grand re-opening last May. Why? Three of our artists were in attendance including James Koehler, Anne Bossert, and Robert Bell. Many people forget that meeting the artist can be a very rewarding experience. One of our represented or exhibiting artists is usually present at every reception. Our next reception is with Arizona artist Bruce Marion. We will have his newest series on display with a reception at the beginning of November.

James Koehler & Anne Bossert Currently on View

Translations Gallery is honored to feature artists James Koehler and Anne Bossert September 18th through October 31st. The artists display two types of weaving, including tapestry and incorporating weaving into furniture. This exhibition takes the gallery back to its roots as a fiber art gallery.

James Koehler's work is thoroughly rooted in the cultural traditions of the American Southwest, yet is boldly contemporary, making him one of the most sought out weavers in the southwest. He dyes his own wool to achieve vibrant unique colors and does all of the weaving himself with a high quality of craftsmanship. He continues to be influenced by the extraordinary landscape and unique cultures of New Mexico and by certain aspects of the monastic aesthetic--simplicity, purity, seeking and portraying only what is essential.

Anne Bossert creates furniture as the means to communicate her solid belief in the profound beauty of the handmade. Each piece of furniture is hand-carved and dyed by the artist and features hand-dyed, hand-woven cloth as a design element. She deliberately uses Baltic birch plywood for its fine striations. Her palettes are subtle to bold as well as contemporary and sophisticated.

Artist Reception with both artists in attendance: Friday, October 2nd 6:00 - 8:30pm

Payment Plans and Small Works at Translations Gallery

Translations Gallery is offering art collectors an affordable means to continue collecting in these tough economic times. Owner Judy Hagler has decided to develop interest free payment plans that range from 3 - 6 months. The idea is similar to what many businesses are doing right now, but has rarely been applied to art galleries. A $3,000 piece of art is suddenly within reach for people. With a 6 month payment plan, the work is only $500/month.

The gallery has also brought in smaller pieces by their group of 20 represented artists. Mark Bowles, who just had a piece accepted into the Denver Art Museum, has originals that range from $1,800 - $12,000, but he also creates high quality giclees that are only $500. The gallery also has small works by Colorado artist Deidre Adams. She just had a piece acquired into the new Ritz Carlton, Lake Tahoe, and has small original work at the gallery from $85 - $190.

Judy Hagler wants to spread the word that fine art galleries have affordable work! She is happy to fine the right piece for anyone's budget.

Review in the Westword - James Dormer & Paul Flippen

Our current show at Translations Gallery was just reviewed by Michael Paglia in the Westword!

"The tight-looking duet James Dormer & Paul Flippen, at Translations Gallery (1743 Wazee Street, 303-629-0713, http://www.translationsgallery.com/), features two artists on the faculty of Colorado State University. Though both work on paper, their approaches are quite different: Dormer is a classic modernist, while Flippen delves into postmodernism." Read the full article here

Denver Art: Wrapped for Ransom

From 9News.com:

"Art in Downtown Denver has drawn the attention to many for its unsightly appearance. Sculptures in front of the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building, the main Denver Public Library, as well as one sculpture in Civic Center Park have been covered with black plastic and wrapped with yellow caution tape. Some may pass thinking there is work being done to them, others may think they were vandalized. Both could not be further from the truth. This art has been wrapped to do what it's doing, get you talking, and make you think about the art underneath the wrap." Read the full article here

Denver Art Scene Undergoing "Cultural Renaissance"

We were very happy to read today's Denver Post that Denver's art scene is undergoing exciting changes! We've always had a vision of what Denver's art scene could be and we're excited to see that it's moving in that direction.

"Feds Put Denver, Ft. Collins on Serious List"
by Claire Trageser The Denver Post

"Visit Denver spent $16 million promoting tourism last year, and [Visit Denver Pres. Richard] Scharf said the list does not dilute efforts to play up the city's attractions-pro sports teams, a hip dining scene, outdoor recreation and an art scene undergoing what he calls a 'cultural renaissance.'"

Article on Sandhi Schimmel Gold in Green Living Nevada

"From Trash to Treasure "
by Jared Harmon
Green Living Nevada
"There are no shoeboxes of old birthday cards collecting dust in Sandy Schimmel’s closet. There are no take-out menus cluttering her kitchen counter or pieces of junk mail taking up space on her coffee table. The colorful paper waste that most people can’t wait to shove in a drawer or a trash can, Schimmel is turning into art worth thousands of dollars." Read the article

Posted: 06/12/2009 01:00:00 AM MDT

In an art world that can too often seem derivative, collectors, curators and critics are always on the lookout for something fresh and different.

Fitting the bill are the wonderful, loose sculptures of Ruth Borgenicht of Glen Ridge, N.J. — basketlike, mesh works meticulously constructed of hundreds of interwoven rings of salt-fired stoneware. Read more

Our latest review from the Denver Post!

Art galleries seeing new side of LoDo High-end dealers who tried other areas are moving inLower downtown was Denver's unrivaled art district in the early 1990s. But skyrocketing rents and the changing nature of the neighborhood, spurred in part by the arrival of Coors Field, forced many of those spaces to close or move to other parts of the city.

New Artist: Mark Bowles

Check out work by our newest artist, Mark Bowles. His paintings are subjective, simple and filled with light and color, a harmonious balance between the Western landscape and his passion for abstraction. His landscapes are individual statements that have emerged from a rich tradition of California landscape painting. The large scale results in a vast visual picture plane with bold areas of color intermingled with subtle painterly areas. The reward for the viewer is resonating landscapes whose color and expressive brushwork evoke a vibrant sense of place.
